Stone-Styled Nutcracker: A Simple DIY Twist for a Classic Holiday Touch

Tis the season to be jolly, they say. And what better way to embrace the festive spirit than by transforming a regular, unsuspecting red nutcracker into a perfect piece sure to make your home feel extra holly! Join me as I turn a classic holiday decoration into a masterpiece that will leave the family amazed and puzzled.

First things first, I scoured the town for a white nutcracker. Our local Walmart was all out so I had to settle for red. However, I thankfully was able to make the red work. After all, nothing says "Happy Holidays" quite like a giant stone nutcracker to complete your holiday living room decor!

Now, let me give you a piece of advice – if you're planning to add a 6ft tall nutcracker to your decor make sure to do it outside. Trust me; you don't want your living room looking like a stone-age battleground. Unless, of course, you're going for that Flintstones aesthetic.

I used three different types of spray paint and one vision. Three cans of primer, two cans of light grey, and finally – two cans of stone-textured spray paint. Who needs a boring old wooden nutcracker when you can have one that looks like it just stepped out of a Michelangelo sculpture?

As I started adding the primer onto the nutcracker, I was hoping the red would cover and thankfully it did. Two cans of primer later it was finally starting to look like my vision was coming to life.

Now, a crucial piece of advice for all you budding nutcracker sculptors out there – patience is key. I highly recommend waiting for each layer to dry completely. Not only does it give you time to finish decorating the giant tree you’ve been putting off, but it also ensures the best application of paint.

Following the primer drying I added a nice thick layer of the grey. Make sure you’re not over saturating your nutcrackers or your paint will start running everywhere. After that I made sure and let him completely dry overnight. Then the final coat is adding the stone textured paint and watch as your stone nutcracker vision comes together.

So, if you're feeling adventurous and want to add a touch of humor to your festivities, grab a red or white nutcracker if you’re lucky enough to find one, some spray paint, and let your imagination run wild. Who knows, you might just start a new holiday tradition – the great nutcracker makeover. May your holidays be filled with laughter, creativity, and unique DIY projects!
